Guimaraes Embroidery, also known as Portuguese Whitework, originated in Guimaraes (Portugal) and is first documented in the 19th Century. This type of embroidery was used on early clothing worn by the people of Guimaraes and was stitched onto fine and course type linen.

Original Hardanger is very old. In ancient times in Asia and Persia, it was done in silk on neHing. Modern Hardanger is of Norwegian origin and is named after the city Hardanger.
